You do not need a big budget to fill a weekend with kids in Raleigh. Always-Free Family Spots in the Triangle

These places have free admission or free entry year-round — no event, no season, no catch. Bookmark them.

NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Downtown Raleigh — 11 W. Jones St.

This is the one we recommend first to every new family in the Triangle. The largest natural history museum in the Southeast, and admission is genuinely free — four floors of dinosaurs, a living butterfly conservatory, the whale skeletons hanging in the Nature Exploration Center, and the Nature Research Center next door with its three-story glass globe. Bring a stroller, plan on the whole morning, and pack a snack because the only thing that costs money is the 3D theater and the cafe. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than weekends.

Best for: Rainy days, toddlers through tweens

NC Museum of Art

Blue Ridge Road, West Raleigh

The permanent collection is always free, and honestly the 164-acre Museum Park outside is the real draw for families. Miles of paved trails wind past large-scale outdoor sculptures kids can walk right up to — the giant 'Gyre' rings and the 'Cloud Chamber' are favorites. It is one of the few places in Raleigh where you can combine an art museum visit with a genuine outdoor run-around. Special ticketed exhibitions cost extra, but you can have a full free afternoon without ever buying one.

Best for: Mixed indoor-outdoor afternoons

NC Museum of History

Downtown Raleigh — 5 E. Edenton St.

Free admission, right on Bicentennial Plaza next to the Natural Sciences museum — which means you can pair the two on a single downtown trip. The Story of North Carolina exhibit walks you through the state from its earliest days, and there are hands-on areas that hold the attention of elementary-age kids. Note: the museum has been undergoing a major renovation, so check the current hours and which galleries are open before you go.

Best for: Elementary-age kids, downtown pairing

Pullen Park

Near NC State — 520 Ashe Ave.

One of the oldest public parks in the country, and it is free to walk in and spend the whole day. The playgrounds, splash-friendly areas, picnic shelters, and the lake are all no-cost. The carousel, train, pedal boats, and kiddie boats run on inexpensive tickets — but plenty of families come, play, and picnic without spending a dime. The aquatic center and arts center sit right inside the park too. Parking fills fast on warm weekends, so arrive before 10am.

Best for: All-day outings, picnics

JC Raulston Arboretum

Beryl Road, near NC State

A free 10-acre garden run by NC State that most families drive past without knowing about. It is calm, beautiful, and easy to manage with little ones — open paths, a lath house, themed garden 'rooms,' and seasonal blooms that give you a reason to come back through the year. There is no admission charge; the arboretum simply suggests a small donation. A great low-key morning when you want green space without a crowd.

Best for: Quiet mornings, nature walks

Wake County Public Libraries & Storytimes

20+ branches across Raleigh & Wake County

The single most underrated free resource for Triangle families. Every branch — Cameron Village, North Regional, Eva Perry in Apex, and the rest — runs free baby, toddler, and preschool storytimes on a weekly schedule, plus school-break programs and craft sessions. Durham County and Chapel Hill Public Library systems run their own storytime calendars too. A library card also unlocks free museum passes and digital books. Check each branch's calendar, because storytime days vary.

Best for: Babies, toddlers, weekly routine

The Triangle Greenway Network

Capital Area Greenway + regional trails

Raleigh's Capital Area Greenway system alone runs well over 100 miles of paved, mostly-flat trail — free to use, stroller- and balance-bike-friendly, and connected to parks all over the city. Family favorites include the Neuse River Trail, the loop around Lake Johnson, and Shelley Lake at Sertoma Park. Durham and Chapel Hill add their own trails to the network. It is the easiest free outing in the Triangle: park, walk or bike, go home.

Best for: Strollers, bikes, energy-burning

Dorothea Dix Park

South of downtown Raleigh — 2105 Umstead Dr.

Raleigh's 308-acre signature park, free to enter, with some of the best skyline views in the city. The Gipson Play Plaza is the headline for families — a large, modern, free playground with water-play features in the warm months. Beyond that you get rolling open fields perfect for kite-flying and picnics, and a steady calendar of free community events. It is still growing, so expect to see more added each year.

Best for: Big open space, the new playground

NC State Farmers Market

Lake Wheeler Road, South Raleigh

Free to walk through, open most days of the year, and a genuinely fun sensory outing for kids — produce stands, the garden center, a seafood market, and seasonal pumpkins and Christmas trees. You do not have to buy anything to enjoy wandering the open-air sheds. It pairs well with a stop at one of the on-site restaurants if you want to make a morning of it. A reliable free outing even in shoulder seasons.

Best for: Sensory walks, seasonal visits

Frequently Asked Questions

What's free at the museums in Raleigh?
Several of Raleigh's best museums have free general admission year-round: the NC Museum of Natural Sciences (all four floors plus the butterfly conservatory), the NC Museum of History, and the permanent collection at the NC Museum of Art. At all three, only special exhibitions, 3D films, or ticketed events cost extra — you can plan a full family day at any of them without spending money. Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh does charge admission, but check it for free community days.
Are Raleigh parks free to visit?
Yes. Raleigh's city and county parks are free to enter and use — including Pullen Park, Lake Johnson, Shelley Lake, and Dorothea Dix Park. Playgrounds, picnic shelters (unless reserved), splash features, and the entire greenway trail network are all no-cost. The only things that typically cost money are extras like the carousel and train rides at Pullen Park or boat rentals — none of which you need to pay for to enjoy the parks.
What free things can families do on a rainy day in Raleigh?
Rainy days are when Raleigh's free museums earn their keep. The NC Museum of Natural Sciences gives you four indoor floors of dinosaurs and live animals; the NC Museum of History and the indoor galleries of the NC Museum of Art are also free and dry. Library branches across Wake, Durham, and Orange counties run free indoor storytimes and craft programs. All of these keep little ones busy without anyone spending a dollar.
Where can I find free toddler activities in Raleigh?
Free weekly storytimes at Wake County, Durham County, and Chapel Hill public libraries are the easiest place to start — most branches run dedicated baby and toddler sessions. Beyond that, the playgrounds and splash areas at Pullen Park and the Gipson Play Plaza at Dorothea Dix Park are free, and the flat paved greenways are perfect for new walkers and balance bikes. We tag toddler-friendly events on our live listings so you can filter by age.
How often is the list of free Raleigh events updated?
The live 'free events happening soon' list on this page is refreshed continuously as new events are added to our calendar — it pulls upcoming free family events across Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill automatically. For a weekly roundup delivered to your inbox, subscribe to the Raleigh Mom Club newsletter, which goes out every Thursday.
Is everything on this page actually free?
Yes. The places in the 'always free' section have free general admission or free entry year-round. The live events section only shows events flagged as free in our calendar. As always, double-check official hours and any 'suggested donation' notes before you go — a few spots, like the JC Raulston Arboretum, are free but appreciate a small voluntary donation.
