Free Outdoor Concerts in the Triangle

Blanket, snacks, kids who can run in circles while you actually hear live music — the Triangle's free concert series are the easiest summer evenings there are.

37 upcoming on our calendar
Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill

The Triangle runs free outdoor concert series nearly every week from late spring through early fall — the Midtown Beach Music Series at North Hills in Raleigh, the Town of Cary's free concerts at the Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park, Wake Forest's Friday Night on White, and free live music on the lawn at Durham's American Tobacco Campus.

All of them are genuinely free, all of them are outdoors where kids can move, and most sit next to food trucks or restaurants so dinner solves itself. The perennial series are below, followed by a live list of free concerts on our verified calendar.

The Perennial Free Series

These series come back every summer. Lineups and exact dates change each season — the live list below has what's actually coming up.

Midtown Beach Music Series

North Hills, Raleigh

Raleigh's most established free summer series — beach music and shag bands on the North Hills lawn, surrounded by restaurants and a short walk from the Midtown ice cream options that end every kid's evening. It draws a real crowd, but the vibe stays family-casual: camp chairs, dancing toddlers, and grandparents who know every word.

Best for: Multi-generation outings, dinner-plus-music evenings

Town of Cary Concerts at Sertoma Amphitheatre

Fred G. Bond Metro Park, Cary

A small amphitheater tucked into Cary's biggest park, with a free summer concert series that feels made for young families — the natural bowl means kids can wander without disappearing, and you can pair the show with the Bond Park playgrounds and lake trails before the music starts. Bring a picnic; it is the lowest-stress free concert setting in the Triangle.

Best for: Little kids, picnic dinners, low-key evenings

Friday Night on White

Downtown Wake Forest

Wake Forest closes down White Street for free Friday-evening concerts through the warm months — live bands, food vendors, and a genuine small-town block-party feel. It is the kind of series where your kids end up dancing with someone else's kids by the second song. Arrive early for parking; downtown fills fast.

Best for: Block-party energy, elementary-age kids

American Tobacco Campus Lawn

Downtown Durham

Durham's American Tobacco Campus runs free live music on its central lawn through the season, set against the old brick warehouses and the water canal kids love to follow. It pairs perfectly with a Durham Bulls game night or dinner at the campus restaurants — music is the free part, everything else is optional.

Best for: Durham families, pairing with dinner downtown

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Triangle outdoor concerts are actually free?
The town-run and district-run series are free: the Midtown Beach Music Series at North Hills, the Town of Cary's concerts at Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park, Friday Night on White in Wake Forest, and the free live music on the American Tobacco Campus lawn in Durham. Ticketed venues like Koka Booth Amphitheatre and Red Hat Amphitheater are a different category — great, but not free.
Are free outdoor concerts kid-friendly?
Yes — that's the point of them. Every series listed here is on an open lawn or closed street where kids can move around, and all of them draw a heavily family crowd. Bring a blanket or camp chairs, and expect the music to wrap up by 9pm or so at most series.
When does the free concert season run in the Triangle?
Roughly May through September, with a few series starting in late April and a few running into October. Each town publishes its own season schedule in spring. Our live list above shows the free concerts actually on the calendar for the next month.
What should we bring?
A blanket or low chairs, water, and bug spray cover it. Most series allow outside snacks and have food trucks or nearby restaurants. A frisbee or bubbles buys you another 45 minutes of toddler patience.
