"A powerful new multimedia art exhibition looking at the intersections of local civil rights history, visual storytelling and community identity will open late next month. “Looking Back: Where Memory Takes Root,” a solo photography exhibition by acclaimed local artist Barbara Tyroler, runs from Aug. 29-Oct. 3 at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center in Chapel Hill." The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 1:30p.m.-4p.m. The reception features a special multidisciplinary showcase including: Film Screening: A presentation of the documentary film “Swimming at the Center: The Story of the A.D. Clark Pool,” chronicling the 1961 desegregation-era history of the historic Hargraves Community Center pool built for local Black families. Companion Fine Art: A viewing of Tyroler’s companion series, “The Human Element: Water, Light & the Art of Connection.” Intersectional Showcase: A “Meet the Artists” segment presenting Tyroler’s landscape photography alongside historic art quilts by celebrated local creator Ida La-Vern Couch. Art quilts by Ida La-Vern Couch Tyroler partnered with the Marion Cheek Jackson Center to embed interactive oral history QR codes directly into the gallery layout, bringing the history to life. Visitors can scan the codes to listen to the lived experiences and memories of historic Northside neighborhood residents.
