We will cover the materials needed and demonstrations on how to create surface designs with stabilizing running stitches. Sashiko (刺し子, meaning “little pokes” or “small piercing”) is a form of functional embroidery that originated in Japan.
Duke Arts Create: Sashiko is a hands-on community workshop focused on the traditional Japanese art of functional embroidery used to reinforce and decorate textiles. Led by local artist River Takada, this session teaches the basic running stitches and geometric patterns used to patch worn clothing and create beautiful surface designs. This free workshop is open to the public and is best suited for adults and teenagers who have the fine motor skills and patience for hand sewing. The event takes place at the Arts Annex in Durham, which offers limited on-site parking. You do not need prior embroidery experience to attend, but bringing a favorite piece of denim or a cotton tote bag to practice on is highly recommended. It is a productive way to spend a Monday evening learning a practical, screen-free skill. You will leave with the confidence to repair your children's worn-out play clothes instead of throwing them away.
