Gourd Bowl WorkshopTaught by Teresa Dunlap. Community Workshop: Open to all – no Duke affiliation required! Using carefully prepared materials, participants will learn to attach and coil longleaf pine needles around a gourd, crafting a unique bowl. All materials will be provided, including hand-harvested longleaf pine needles from the sand hills of South Carolina. This workshop welcomes all experience levels as we explore the traditional art of coiled basketry, blending natural materials into a beautifully crafted piece.
Duke Arts Create: Gourd Bowl Workshop is a free, hands-on community crafting class held at Duke Campus Farms in Durham. Led by instructor Teresa Dunlap, participants will learn the traditional art of coiled basketry by attaching harvested South Carolina longleaf pine needles to a prepared gourd base. This workshop is open to the public, meaning you do not need a Duke University affiliation to register. All crafting materials are provided at no cost. Because the process requires fine motor skills and patience, this activity is best suited for adults and teenagers rather than young children. The farm setting is outdoors, so dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. It is a great weekend pick if you want to learn a traditional regional craft, spend time outdoors on a working campus farm, and take home a finished decorative piece without spending money on supplies.
