According to Raleigh Mom Club, the first sensory-friendly holiday dates with 2026 details on the organizer's own page are the NC Chinese Lantern Festival's Sensory Friendly Night in Cary (Tuesday, December 1) and Holly Springs' Santa Cares (Wednesday, December 2, 4 to 7 p.m.), where you reserve a free spot and sign-up had not opened as of Nov 5. Bierman Autism Centers lists free sensory Santa visits in North Raleigh (December 5) and Garner (December 12). Downtown Cary Park's sensory photos with Santa has no 2026 date posted yet.

  • Santa visits

Holly Springs Santa Cares. The town calls it "a sensory-friendly holiday event for families with all types of special needs." It is Wednesday, Dec 2, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Holly Springs Cultural Center, 300 West Ballentine St. The page says to "Sign up to reserve your spot for free soon!" so this is a reservation event, not a walk-up. No ages are listed and no sign-up date is posted yet. Watch hollyspringsnc.gov and reserve the day it opens.

Bierman Autism Centers, North Raleigh and Garner. Bierman's events page lists "FREE Annual Sensory Santa" on Saturday, Dec 5 at 5151 Glenwood Avenue, Suite 110, Raleigh, and Saturday, Dec 12 at 148 Spaceway Court, Suite 150, Garner. Each listing has a Register link and shows "Tickets Available," so register ahead rather than showing up. The page gives no start times, so check the registration page. The page lists no Cary session for 2026.

Downtown Cary Park. The park's sensory-friendly photos with Santa have run before: softened lights, music at a soothing level, lower indoor capacity and sensory bags. It was free and open to the public, and parents stayed with their child the whole time. The park has an event accessibility form if you need accommodations. The park's page still shows the Dec 10, 2024 edition, 1 to 3 p.m., and no 2026 date. Don't plan around it until a date appears.

    Light shows and train rides

NC Chinese Lantern Festival, Cary. The festival runs Nov 21 through Jan 10 at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway. The Sensory Friendly Night is December 1, with a Twilight Session at 4:30 p.m. and an Evening Session at 6 p.m. The page promises "lower volume music, reduced attendance," no strobe or flashing lights, and "a designated Quiet Area." Tickets are bought through Etix and the page lists no price. The festival is a walkthrough that takes most guests 45 to 75 minutes.

New Hope Valley Railway, New Hill. The Sensory-Friendly Winter Ride is Wednesday, Dec 9 at 10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m., at 3900 Bonsal Rd. The rides have no music, Santa waits in the railyard instead of on the train, and the brakemen signal before the horn sounds. Tickets go through Etix, with no price on the page. Food and snacks from home are welcome on the train.

    Shows and museum mornings

Cary Ballet Company. The sensory-friendly Nutcracker Suite is Friday, Dec 18 at 11 a.m. at the Cary Arts Center. It is a one-hour narrated show for "children and families with autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities, or other disabilities." House lights stay dim, music is softer, there are no flashing lights, you can move around, and there is a quiet room in the lobby. A social narrative is available to download. Tickets went on sale Oct 9 and no price is posted on the page, so check the ticket page soon.

Raleigh Little Theatre. The accessibility page lists a sensory-friendly performance of Cinderella on Saturday, December 19 at 2 (the page shows no year; the production runs Dec 4 to 20). It lists reduced loud sounds and flashing lights, modified house lights, freedom to talk or move, extra staff, and a "Take a Break Space." The box office number is 919-821-3111. We did not find a price on RLT's pages.

NC Museum of Natural Sciences. The Dueling Dinosaurs Sensory Friendly Morning is Sunday, Dec 13, 10 a.m. to noon, at 11 West Jones Street, Raleigh. It is not a Santa event, but the exhibit has "reduced noise effects and smaller crowds." Headphones and sensory bags are on loan in limited numbers. "Free registration is not necessary but encouraged," and the museum lists free general admission.

    Tips

  • Ask for what your kid needs. Quiet rooms, headphones and dim lights are listed, but ask the organizer about specifics before you go.
  • Book early. Reservation and ticket events can fill up, and the Cary Ballet tickets are already on sale.
  • Preview the day. Cary Ballet offers a social narrative. For the other events, look at the venue photos together.
  • Plan a bailout. Pick an aisle seat or park close, and bring your own headphones even where the venue lends some.
  • For regular Santa photo lines with confirmed dates, see our Santa guide. For year-round quieter outings, see our sensory-friendly activities guide.

    Before you go

Reserve Holly Springs the day sign-up opens, register for Bierman's Dec 5 or Dec 12 visit soon, and buy Cary Ballet tickets now. The rest are ticket purchases, except the museum morning, where registration is optional. Dates change, so confirm on the organizer's page the week you go.
