The largest natural history museum in the Southeast, and admission is genuinely free — four floors of dinosaurs, a living butterfly conservatory, and whale skeletons. The only things that cost money are the 3D theater and the cafe. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than weekends.

Blue Ridge Road, West Raleigh
The permanent collection is always free, but the 164-acre Museum Park outside is the real draw for families — miles of paved trails past large-scale outdoor sculptures kids can walk right up to. A full free afternoon without ever buying a ticketed exhibition.
