A fantastical menagerie of beasts and characters take to the stage (and audience), enchanting, awing and inspiring people of all ages. This year, the theme is in the title. What is the 'Wild Wisdom of the World' indeed?!We are living and making into the questions, knowing that whatever it is, we need to get closer to it. Everything changes. Nothing exists in isolation. All life moves and wants to repair and renew. All flourishing is mutual as Robin Wall Kimmerer reflected so clearly. From stewarding shepherds with their flocks, to great elemental dragons resisting the onslaught of the extractive and destructive 'greyness'. From the movement of a migrating Perula, to the small but mighty beat of a monarchs wing. This show is all about belonging to the living landscape of the Earth. It’s about becoming the courageous creative beings that we need to be to face what is ahead.Join us for some wondrous moments of delight, connection and fun! Paperhand’s 26th annual giant puppet production featuring masks, huge puppets, stilts, shadows and illuminated creatures all brought to life with live original music by the Paperhand band!

The Wild Wisdom of the World is an outdoor giant puppet performance by the Paperhand Puppet Intervention that uses large-scale papier-mache figures, stilts, and live music to tell stories about the natural world. This performance takes place at the historic Forest Theatre on the UNC campus, which features stone terraced seating. Tickets are twenty-five dollars for adults and fifteen dollars for children ages four to fourteen, while kids three and under can attend for free. Because the stone seating can get uncomfortable during the long show, you will want to pack seat cushions, blankets, and plenty of water and snacks for your kids. Parking near the theater is limited, so plan to arrive early to find a spot in the nearby campus decks or along Boundary Street. This show makes a fantastic weekend outing because it combines visual art, theater, and the beauty of a shaded woodland stage. It is a local summer tradition that keeps children captivated with its massive, colorful creatures while offering parents a peaceful afternoon under the trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this event suitable for toddlers?
While children of all ages are welcome, the performance features large puppets, loud music, and dramatic themes that might scare very young toddlers. Children ages four and up typically get the most out of the experience.
Where should I park for the Forest Theatre?
Street parking is available along Boundary Street and Park Place, but it fills up quickly. Your best bet is to use the UNC campus parking decks, such as the Park Library deck, and walk over to the theater.
Can we bring food into the theater?
Yes, you can bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Packing a picnic to eat on the stone bleachers before the show starts is a great way to keep kids happy while you wait.
