The Haunting Hour 2026 is a live theatrical performance that shares the spooky history and ghost stories of Hillsborough through partnership with local actors. Held at the historic Hughes Academy, this event replaces the town's traditional walking spirit tours with a seated storytelling experience. Tickets cost twenty dollars per person, and you can purchase an optional add-on ticket for a guided walk through the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church cemetery. The main performance takes place indoors, making it a reliable option regardless of late October weather. While the free autumn festival at the visitor center welcomes all ages, the ghost stories themselves are best suited for middle schoolers and teenagers who enjoy a mild scare. This event makes an excellent weekend outing because it combines local history with seasonal fun. You can browse the local shops at the visitor center, grab dinner in downtown Hillsborough, and enjoy a structured evening of entertainment that feels festive without requiring a drive to a massive commercial haunted house.

Frequently Asked Questions
