Medicare is a big deal for our community. Nearly 70 million Americans rely on Medicare, and understanding it helps Durham County families avoid missed enrollment windows, coverage gaps, and surprise bills. The 4 Parts of Medicare, simplified. Part A covers hospital care, Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care, Part C (Medicare Advantage) bundles A and B (often with D), and Part D covers prescription drugs. Part D just got a major overhaul. As of 2025, the prescription drug "donut hole" is gone for good, and out-of-pocket drug costs are now capped at $2,000 (2025) / $2,100 (2026) per year. Turning 65 starts a 7-month enrollment window. Missing this Initial Enrollment Period can mean permanent, lifelong penalties on Part B and Part D premiums, so timing matters. Choosing the right care network matters locally. Comparing Duke Health vs. UNC Health, and Oak Street Health vs. CenterWell, helps residents pick a plan that keeps their preferred doctors in-network and fits their transportation and care needs.
