This year, in partnership with NC Modernist, Preservation Durham is delighted to bring you a fall home tour, the Harkrader Home Tour. From 1972-2000, Richard and Lonna Harkrader founded, owned, and operated New Morning Construction and New Morning Realty, two businesses that built numerous passive solar, energy-efficient homes and apartments with a unique architectural style in and around the Morehead Hill neighborhood of Durham. Join Preservation Durham and NC Modernist in celebrating the beautiful homes designed by the Harkrader on Saturday, October 10th. Visit six homes with beautiful landscapes, wood-built design elements, and intentional and thoughtful energy-efficient considerations.

The Harkrader Home Tour is a self-guided community walking tour showcasing six passive solar, energy-efficient homes built in Durham between 1972 and 2000. To participate, head to the ticket headquarters at Orchard Park to check in. Because this tour involves walking through private residences with wood-built design elements and landscaped yards, it is best suited for teenagers who have an interest in architecture or sustainability rather than toddlers. Ticket prices are not yet published, so check the host website before you go. This event makes a wonderful Saturday outing for parents and older kids who want to explore a historic Durham neighborhood while learning about practical, eco-friendly home design.
