Bring steel to life in this beginner friendly forging class. We’ll show you how to create a dog or mouse using a hammer, punches, and chisels to forge in the details of your own lil’ critter. These techniques can be used to create many different animals on your own. In class, students will have a chance to either make a couple different creatures, or turn their animal into a full project by adding a hook or bottle opener. Both make great gifts!

Forged Critters is a beginner-friendly blacksmithing workshop where participants learn to shape raw steel into small animal figures. Led by instructors at ShopSpace, attendees use traditional tools like hammers, punches, and chisels to craft a personalized steel dog or mouse. You can also choose to turn your finished metal animal into a functional bottle opener or wall hook to take home. This class is designed for participants ages 14 and older, and any teenager under 18 must register and attend alongside a parent or guardian. Registration costs $85 per person, which covers all necessary safety gear, metal materials, and instruction. Wear closed-toe shoes and natural fiber clothing like cotton, as synthetic fabrics can melt around hot sparks. If you have a teenager who enjoys hands-on projects or is interested in trade skills, this class offers a rare chance to work in a real metal shop. It is a productive way to spend a Saturday morning learning a traditional craft together.
What is the minimum age to participate in the forging class?
Participants must be at least 14 years old. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian during the entire workshop.
Do we need to bring our own safety equipment?
No, ShopSpace provides all the necessary safety gear and tools. You only need to wear closed-toe shoes and cotton clothing for safety.
