Photo: Mace Publishing, LLC The 72 acre Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, North Carolina, has a rich history of more than 140 years. Its park-like setting is the final resting place for over 22,000 people, including many prominent city, state and national leaders. Among the buried here are seven governors, five U. S. Senators, eight North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justices, four Civil War generals and more. Historic Oakwood Cemetery hosts events throughout the year in its park-like setting. First Friday Cemetery Tours First Friday Cemetery ToursFirst Friday of month, from June to October, 20266 p.m.$10 (registration required; follow above link to the calendar and register) $10 per person, ticket sales go toward monument preservation. Tours meet at the front gate beginning at 6 p.m., the tour leaves promptly at 6:30. Attendees will hear stories of some of Oakwood’s famous and infamous residents. What to bring:– Water– Weather appropriate clothing– Questions about local history, the cemetery, and the death industry. This monthly event is intended to appeal to first time and dedicated visitors alike.Attendees will explore a new section of the cemetery each month. Your guide will share new research as well as old stories not told on the more structured tours. Stroll through history is a small group tour. Last minute changes to curriculum and route to meet group interests and ability are expected and welcome. The following dates are on the event calendar for 2026 for the cemetery tours.
