Field & Factory is a guided historical walking tour at Duke Homestead that explores the lives, contributions, and struggles of the diverse workforce behind North Carolina's early tobacco industry. The program offers an honest look at the people who worked the fields and factories, providing important context about our region's past. To make the most of your visit, plan for an entirely outdoor experience. The tour departs from the visitor center lobby at 11:15 AM, so aim to arrive ten minutes early to get everyone settled. Because the tour covers historical grounds and involves walking, it is best suited for school-aged children and teens who can comfortably follow a guide. Be sure to bring water bottles and wear comfortable closed-toe shoes for the unpaved paths. This event is an excellent weekend choice because it combines fresh air with a meaningful, easy-to-digest history lesson. It is a simple way to help your older kids connect with local history beyond the classroom, all without spending a dime.
