Outdoors

Festival of Fabulous Mums: Growing Fabulous Mums with Joan Matthews is a free, one-hour gardening workshop at Sarah P. Duke Gardens focused on teaching the public how to cultivate exhibition-quality chrysanthemums. What to Know: This session takes place inside the Pelham-Cullen Classroom at the Barnes Welcome Center. While the technical details of soil, fertilizer, and plant propagation are best suited for adults and teenagers, younger children will enjoy seeing the live plant samples at various stages of growth. Admission is free, but you will need to pay for parking at the Duke Gardens lot, which is three dollars per hour. This workshop makes a smart Sunday morning outing because you can learn a new skill from a national judge, then spend the afternoon walking through the gardens to see the massive floral displays in full bloom.
