This summer in North Carolina we have been yanked back and forth between extreme drought and torrential downpours. Our temperamental weather only seems to be getting more extreme year after year! Have you ever wondered why this is happening and what its long term effects will be on our environment? Join Dr. Julianne Davis, a geologist and climate scientist at UNC's Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences, on Tuesday October 13th from 6:00-7:30p.m., in the Innovation Lab to deep dive into the causes and effects of climate whiplash, and how it relates to our local weather here in Durham. We will have hands on activities, a presentation as well as time for Q&A! Climate Whiplash: Extreme Weather Explained is an interactive educational program at the Durham Main Library focused on local weather patterns. Dr. Julianne Davis from UNC will explain the science behind our state's sudden shifts between drought and heavy rain. The evening includes a presentation, hands-on activities, and a question-and-answer session. This program is free to attend, but you must register in advance to secure a spot in the Innovation Lab. If you need accessibility accommodations, please email the library staff at least two business days before the event. It is a smart weekday addition to your schedule because it connects big environmental concepts to our daily lives in the Triangle. The interactive elements keep the science accessible, and you will leave with a better understanding of the weather we see right outside our windows.
