In this 4-session workshop, students learn how to intervene, play, and invite chance into analog processes. In the first session, we start by building pinhole cameras. From there, we make photographs on site and develop them in the darkroom. Pinhole camerawork is an invitation to engage with history and to see firsthand how simplistic yet otherworldly “sun drawing” was and is. Towards the end of the day, each participant will be given a recipe and a roll of 35mm color film to shoot and soup at home. On day 2, we tackle Sabattier (or solarization), Chemigrams + Photograms (or Rayographs) in the darkroom, with and without negatives. Using objects, light and resists, we intentionally disrupt the prescribed evolution of the silver gelatin print. Day 3 is a continuation of the prior session, with the addition of lumen prints and daylight. Please take note that we will not have class on Nov 8 and will resume on Nov 15. Our final class concludes with the realization of the “film soup” experiment from Day 1. Students bring in their 35mm exposed, souped and dried color film and learn how to develop their (C41 color) roll. Parental consent required for children under 18 (min age is 15). Some familiarity with analog photography is recommended. Suggested prerequisites: CRASH COURSE or Analog Photo I.
