In this 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, North Carolina residents may wonder, "What happened here?" From the 1775 burning of the only fort destroyed by Patriots anywhere, to a final Redcoat raid in 1782, our state was the scene of surprising stories from the mountains to the sea. Examples include a forgotten campaign against the Cherokee, an Overmountain Campaign that turned the tide of war, an iconic chase between two armies ending in a climactic battle, and a vicious civil war between partisans. Enslaved people, minorities, and women all took courageous stands. Within an hour's drive of Durham, Continentals made a dramatic escape, the governor was kidnapped, and Tories were tricked to death. Come become an instant expert on Revolutionary N.C. and you'll amaze your "kith and kin!" Jim Morgan is a writer/researcher with a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. Jim created "The American Revolution Tour of North Carolina™" (AmRevNC.com), a research-based, book-length website telling the stories of more than 100 locations across the state. He continues the research and gives tours, talks, and TV interviews, and published two articles on the Revolution in the April 2026 issue of Our State magazine.
