Wake County School Choice: Magnet, Year-Round, and the Application Window, Explained

According to Raleigh Mom Club, there is one application window for both Magnet and Year-Round schools in Wake County, and it runs Oct. 15, 2026 through Jan. 21, 2027. One window, two kinds of schools, three months to apply. It is explicitly not first-come, first-served — WCPSS says so directly — so there is no advantage to applying the first day over the last. Early College and Crossroads FLEX High School have their own shorter window that closes Dec. 11, 2026, about six weeks earlier, which trips up families who assume every deadline is the same.

What "base school," "magnet," and "year-round" actually mean
Every family in Wake County is assigned one Base School based on home address. It's your default, guaranteed neighborhood school, and you never have to apply for it.
Everything else is optional. WCPSS runs 61 Choice Schools across 30 unique program themes, including 7 Early Colleges, 2 Leadership Academies, and 11 Model STEM Schools of Distinction. A magnet school is a public school with a specialized theme — STEM, leadership, the arts, global studies, and more — but it teaches the exact same North Carolina Standard Course of Study as your base school. The theme shapes the flavor of the school day, not the curriculum underneath it.
A year-round school is a different animal entirely: it's about the calendar, not the theme. Instead of one long summer break, students go to school on a rotating track schedule with shorter breaks spread across the year. The one calendar you actually need

It is not first-come, first-served — say it out loud
This is the misconception that causes the most panic: applying at 12:01am on Oct. 15 gets you nothing that applying on Jan. 20 doesn't. WCPSS states directly that these applications are not first-come, first-served. There's no early-bird slot and no line to stand in.
Applications are instead prioritized by the type of school, using criteria WCPSS lays out in its "Selection Priorities for Magnet Schools" resource. Read that for the school you're considering rather than taking it on a friend's word.
Students who are selected are automatically assigned to that school. But WCPSS is blunt: approval is not guaranteed. Applying is not the same as getting in, and there's no percentage to quote you, because the district doesn't publish one and neither will we.
What happens on Feb. 24, and what the "applicant pool" is
Every family who applied, through either window, gets notified on the same day: Feb. 24, 2027. If your child wasn't selected, they go into what WCPSS calls an applicant pool. This isn't a numbered waitlist where you're "number 14 of 30." It's a non-numeric pool, so there's no ranking to track or call about.
If February doesn't go the way you hoped, there's a second chance: a Second Round Magnet application window, March 1–12, 2027. Magnet schools only, and short — twelve days, then closed.
Transportation, the honest version
This is the least glamorous part of school choice, and it matters more than families expect. WCPSS is upfront that "some schools require families to drive students to school or to an express bus stop." Even students who do receive neighborhood bus service "may experience ride times longer than one hour."
Whether a program offers busing, requires a hub stop, or means you're driving twice a day varies by school. There is no blanket rule, so check the exact school before you fall in love with the program.
If you have a rising kindergartener
Kindergarten registration and pre-registration open the same day as the choice window, Oct. 15, 2026. Your child must turn 5 on or before Aug. 31 to be age-eligible. Early entry is possible for children who turn 4 by April 16 and meet gifted criteria, which is a separate process rather than the standard track. Whatever school your child lands in, current immunizations and a health assessment need to be on file.

If you just moved here mid-year
You aren't locked out just because the fall window closed. If you move into Wake County and enroll your child, you can submit a transfer request for a magnet school for the current school year within 10 days of enrolling. Put that on your calendar the moment you register, because ten days goes fast when you're unpacking.
