According to Raleigh Mom Club, WakeMed's breastfeeding support groups are free, and a new weekly group at WakeMed Medical Park of Cary starts Thursday, Nov. 5. Durham County families get a free nurse home visit from Family Connects Durham, and Duke's Baby Bistro is a free drop-in group in Durham every Monday from 11 a.m. to noon. Wake County WIC also runs a breastfeeding warm line at 919-250-1213. Some groups ask you to register, so check each page first.
Quick Answers
Home visits after birth
Family Connects Durham. For families with a newborn in Durham County, "regardless of income." The page says "There is no charge to families." You do not have to find it yourself. Birth and contact details come from hospital records, and a representative will "meet with you in the hospital shortly after birth." Baby born elsewhere? You can still sign up at 919-385-0777 or online. A registered nurse does a baby weight and health check and checks on your recovery. Depending on what you need, nurses also help with breastfeeding and connect you to local resources.
Family Connects' own location list shows Durham as the only Triangle site. In Orange County, the Health Department's Family Home Visiting page lists a one-time postpartum and newborn home visit after you leave the hospital. It says its programs are for families on Medicaid and "All services are free." We did not find a matching program for every Wake family.
Breastfeeding groups and phone lines
WakeMed (Wake County). The page calls these groups "FREE" and says they are staffed by certified lactation counselors and consultants. They are for babies from birth through the first year. They offer a baby scale and an open talk. It is fine to arrive late. Sign up: registration is preferred, through the link on the page.
Duke Baby Bistro (Durham). Walk up. Duke's listing says "No registration required." It is a free drop-in group at Duke Behavioral Health North Durham, 3643 N Roxboro St., Mondays 11 a.m.–noon. A lactation consultant is there, with a scale for weighing before and after a feed. Dates run through Dec. 28, and Oct. 26 is next. The Breastfeed Durham page says the second Monday each month is bilingual English/Spanish.
TAPS Baby Cafe (Cary nonprofit, meetings in Raleigh). Sign up. Triangle Area Parenting Support lists these as free: virtual Wed., Nov. 4, 7:30–8:30 p.m.; bilingual Fri., Nov. 6, 10 a.m.–noon at 1100 North Raleigh Blvd.; and bilingual Wake County sessions Thu., Nov. 19 and Dec. 17, 10–11 a.m. TAPS says in-person sessions can include supplies and grocery gift cards. Use "Join the list" on each event page. Questions: text 919-442-8686.
La Leche League. LLL of North Carolina says all breastfeeding and pregnant mothers interested in learning about breastfeeding are welcome, and its volunteer Leaders help by phone, email or text. The number on its site is 984-219-8808. As posted in October 2026, LLL of Apex and Cary meets the second Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrews Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd., Apex. Its page does not list a fee, so confirm before you go.
UNC Warmline. Call 984-974-8078 or toll-free 866-428-5608 to talk with a lactation consultant or ask which UNC clinic fits you. The cost is not posted.
WIC and county help
Wake County WIC. Call the Breastfeeding Warm Line at 919-250-1213 to reach a peer counselor, or ask for a consult at any WIC visit. The county says WIC provides "a breast pump to fit the needs of the family." Eligibility is based on income and a nutrition assessment.
Wake County Best Baby Wake. Fill out the county's form to be connected to a breastfeeding consultation. The page does not state a price.
Orange County Health Department. Breastfeeding support is offered at home, at the Hillsborough clinic or at Piedmont Health Services. Call 919-245-2437 to schedule. The page does not state a price. Its separate Family Home Visiting page says services for Medicaid families are free. For WIC, call 919-245-2422 or 919-245-2447. The office is at 300 W. Tryon St., Hillsborough.

Low-cost option
PEPS groups (TAPS). Twelve weekly meetings of up to 2 hours, in person or on Zoom, for parents with babies up to about 6 months, sometimes 12. Sign up with the interest form. Fees are sliding scale, $120 to $320, and you "pay nothing until your group is ready to start."
Common questions
Do I need to be on Medicaid?
Not for WakeMed, Duke, TAPS Baby Cafe or the hotlines, which do not mention it. Orange County's free home-visiting page is for Medicaid families. WIC has income rules.
Can I just show up?
Duke Baby Bistro says no registration is required. WakeMed prefers it, and TAPS wants you on its list.
What else is free for a new baby?
See our free diapers guide and free and low-cost family resources.
Is this medical advice?
No. These are organizations to call. For a health worry about you or your baby, call your doctor, and call 911 in an emergency.
