Celebrate Take a Child Outside week by becoming a Plant Explorer at the JC Raulston Arboretum! Pick up a Plant Explorer's Field Journal and map from the Visitor Center, then set off on a self-guided adventure through the garden. Follow in the footsteps of our founder, Dr. J.C. Raulston, as you visit five garden destinations, complete observation challenges, collect stamps, and discover plants from around the world. Keep your field journal as a souvenir of your adventure! This free activity is available during regular garden hours throughout Take a Child Outside week.
Take a Child Outside Week is a national initiative designed to help children connect with the natural world through outdoor activities. During this event, the JC Raulston Arboretum hosts a self-guided scavenger hunt where children can learn about botany by following a map to five different garden stations. This activity is best suited for preschool and elementary-aged children who can navigate the paved and gravel paths. Admission is free, and you can pick up the activity journal at the visitor center during regular garden hours. Free parking is available in the paved lot directly outside the main gates, and stroller-friendly paths make it easy to bring younger siblings along. It is an excellent weekend option because it offers a structured, educational outdoor activity that you can complete at your own pace. The arboretum provides plenty of shade, open grassy areas for a post-activity picnic, and a chance to get kids moving without spending any money.
