Let’s go on a spider hunt! We’ll explore the prairie and forest to track down intricate webs and their weavers while diving into the fascinating world of spider biology and the many ways these eight-legged neighbors help our ecosystem. We’ll be using iNaturalist to do some identifying along the way and submit our observations to contribute to collaborative science. This program will prepare you for the NC Spider Search taking place October 3-11, in which you can earn an embroidered spider badge or sticker! It will be helpful to have the free iNaturalist app downloaded prior to this program.

Spider Hunt is a free outdoor nature program at the Prairie Ridge Eco-Station where participants search for webs and learn about spider biology. To prepare for the event, download the free iNaturalist app on your phone before you arrive. You will use the app to identify different species and submit your findings to a collaborative science project. This session also helps prepare you for the upcoming NC Spider Search, where participants can earn a physical badge or sticker. This is a smart Friday morning pick because it gets kids outdoors and moving through the prairie and forest. It turns a simple walk into an active science game that prepares them for a week-long state challenge.
