“Seeing the Garden” is a painting class with instructor James Keul, Durham-based artist and avid gardener, focused on direct observation of the cultivated landscape at Duke Gardens. Working in watercolor, students will interpret light, atmosphere, color and spatial design through careful study of the natural environment. The class emphasizes slow looking and close observation, encouraging students to experience the gardens not only as visitors, but as artists interpreting a living landscape. Participants will explore how pathways, plantings, seasonal color, water and architectural elements create visual rhythm and composition within the garden. Through an instructor demonstration, short studies and a guided painting session, students will develop practical plein air painting skills while deepening their appreciation for horticulture, ecology and landscape design. All levels of experience are welcome. If you have watercolor supplies that you like to use, bring what you have; otherwise, materials will be provided. Rain date: October 28. Fee : $82; 20% discount for Duke Gardens members with discount code. Parking: Parking fees apply. Location: Meet at the Barnes Welcome Center. Accessibility : This will be a small group program that takes place outdoors in a location that requires traveling on a combination of paved and unpaved paths with some uneven surfaces and moderate inclines. Painting is done from a seated position on a bench, the ground or a boulder.
