Grab a bite from the Daily Planet Café and join host Chris Smith for our monthly Science Café. Gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. The Daily Planet Café is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Café. This month at the Science Café, flood resilience experts will highlight the flooding history of the Neuse River Basin, the solutions proposed to alleviate the flood risks in the area, and how individuals can learn more about flood risk in their own communities. In July 2026, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) released the state’s first River Basin Action Strategy (RBAS) for the Neuse River Basin to help mitigate flooding in the region. The Neuse RBAS identified 113 flood resilience actions across the basin, including structural and nonstructural projects such as stormwater improvements, roadway upgrades, nature-based solutions, floodproofing structures, and policy and planning projects. The RBAS was informed by a basin wide vulnerability assessment, community capacity assessment and gap analysis, as well as extensive engagement with local governments, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and other partners throughout the Neuse River Basin.
