Category: Family

The eleventh quilt block in our "A Year of Quilt Blocks" series is Poinsettia designed by Jen Daily Quilts for Moda Bake Shop. While there are many different versions of a poinsettia quilt block, this one stands out for it's simplicity and interesting use of negative space. To create this month's block, you will use all your piecing skills. There are half square triangle units, split square units, and a few smaller units to create this "simple" poinsettia. Accuracy will be key in getting your units to line to create the poinsettia. When choosing your fabric for this block, you will need to decide if you want the background to be light or dark (see photo 2 for examples of both). The skill level for this class is confident beginner with block construction and half square triangle piecing experience needed. Supplies Needed: 2 woven unwashed non-stretch 100% cotton or cotton/linen blend fat quarters (18” x 21” single layer of fabric) - 1 light and 1 dark. You will also need a small scrap for the 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square for the center (scrap fabric for this center block will also be provided if you don't have a scrap in your stash.) Supplies Provided: Sewing machines, sewing tools, rulers, cutting mats, rotary cutters and thread to be used in class. Scrap fabric for center square. Prerequisite: Quilting Level 1: Intro to Block Construction at Craft Habit or equivalent experience as well as block construction and half square triangle piecing experience.
