Come celebrate National Public Lands Day by volunteering with us at William B. Umstead State Park. The workday will be focused on constructing a new portion of trail which will connect the campground to existing trails. No experience is required and all materials will be provided. National Public Lands Day is a nationwide volunteer effort focused on restoring and improving public green spaces. At Umstead State Park, volunteers will spend the afternoon constructing a brand-new section of trail near the Crabtree Creek entrance. Park staff will provide all the necessary tools and instruction, so your family can jump right in and help clear the path. This event is best suited for older children and teenagers who can safely handle basic tools and sustain physical labor for a few hours. Admission is free, but you must register online in advance to secure a spot. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dirty, and pack a backpack with plenty of water and snacks for the afternoon. It is a productive way to spend a Saturday outdoors, giving kids a sense of ownership over the local trails they hike on throughout the year.
