Photo: Depositphotos The Durham County Open Space Program invites the community to enjoy the beauty, diversity, and ecological importance of moths during an upcoming partnership event with the North Carolina Biodiversity Project. Moth Night takes place Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 8 p.m., at Hollow Rock Nature Park, 692 Erwin Road, Durham, North Carolina. Please RSVP so that staff can properly prepare for all attendees. Moth Night includes a walk along part of the Headwaters Loop Trail, as well as games, activities, and prizes. David George, science educator and co-author of the Moths of North Carolina website, and Open Space Program staff, will lead participants in a nighttime celebration of moths. Special lights will be used to attract moths, making it easier for attendees to see and identify these night-dwelling creatures. Moth Night is free and open to the public. If you plan to sign up, here are some things to know ahead of the event: RSVP so that staff can properly prepare for all attendees: https://forms.office.com/g/mMMwnGVkpM This event is open to all ages; participants under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk up to one mile on a natural surface trail over moderately hilly terrain. You are advised to bring water and any medications needed, wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable outdoor clothes and apply bug spray. Bring a flashlight if you have one.
