Join us for a front-row seat to one of nature’s most incredible journeys, the Monarch butterfly migration! We’ll start this family friendly program in our Nature Neighborhood Garden to explore the habitats we steward here at Prairie Ridge and see how these spaces fuel Monarchs along their trek south. Then, we’ll head into the prairie to spot as many butterflies as we can! If we’re lucky, we might even catch and release a live Monarch butterfly. We will learn about the Monarch Larvae Monitoring Project and Monarch Watch collaborative science projects along the way.

Migrating Monarchs is a hands-on nature program at Prairie Ridge Outdoor Classroom where children can learn about butterfly migration and participate in citizen science projects. Visitors will explore the garden habitats to see how local plants support these insects before heading into the open prairie to search for monarchs. This outdoor program is free to attend and runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, September 23. The terrain includes unpaved dirt paths and grassy areas, so a sturdy stroller or baby carrier is best for the littlest ones. Be sure to pack water bottles, wear closed-toe shoes for walking in the brush, and apply sunscreen before you arrive. It is a fantastic weekday morning outing for preschoolers and homeschoolers who want to get outdoors, burn some energy, and learn about local wildlife from knowledgeable educators.
