Migrating Monarchs at Prairie Ridge Ecostation is an outdoor educational program where children can observe and learn about the annual butterfly migration. Staff members guide visitors through the prairie to spot these insects, explain their travel patterns, and demonstrate how researchers track them. What to Know: This program is best suited for toddlers through elementary-aged children who can handle walking on unpaved dirt trails. Admission is free, and stroller users should opt for an all-terrain model due to the grassy terrain. Park in the gravel lot at the main entrance, and be sure to pack water bottles, sunscreen, and bug spray since the site offers very little shade. It makes a wonderful weekday outing because it gets kids moving outdoors while sneaking in a hands-on science lesson. The open trails allow children to explore at their own pace without the pressure of a quiet indoor museum setting.
