Join us for a front-row seat to one of nature’s most incredible journeys, the Monarch butterfly migration! We’ll start this family friendly program in our Nature Neighborhood Garden to explore the habitats we steward here at Prairie Ridge and see how these spaces fuel Monarchs along their trek south. Then, we’ll head into the prairie to spot as many butterflies as we can! If we’re lucky, we might even catch and release a live Monarch butterfly. We will learn about the Monarch Larvae Monitoring Project and Monarch Watch collaborative science projects along the way. All programs at Prairie Ridge currently require pre-registration. Register for this program for ages 5+ on the website. Event recurs on September 16, 17 & 23, 2026.

Migrating Monarchs at Prairie Ridge Ecostation is an outdoor educational event where children can observe and track monarch butterflies during their annual journey south. Visitors can participate in citizen science activities, learn how researchers tag butterflies, and discover how to support pollinator habitats at home. What to Know: This program is completely free and designed for preschool and elementary-aged children. Prairie Ridge Ecostation features natural dirt paths, so leave the stroller behind and opt for a baby carrier instead. Wear closed-toe shoes, pack sunscreen, and bring filled water bottles, as the site is entirely outdoors with limited shade. Parking is free in the gravel lot on site. This event makes a wonderful weekday morning outing because it combines active outdoor play with a gentle, hands-on science lesson. It is an easy, low-stress way to get your kids moving in nature while learning about local wildlife.
