Known Ground Acrylic paintings by Katey Morrill Artist's Statement: Known Ground is a collection of abstract landscape paintings that examines the relationship between remembered northern environments and the southern terrain I now inhabit. Through layers of observation, memory, and reconstruction, these works investigate how landscapes continue to shape our sense of identity long after we have left them behind. The paintings occupy a space between past and present, comparing the visual language of northern coastlines, skies, and seasonal atmospheres with the light, color, and geography of the contemporary South. Rather than depicting specific locations, the work distills these environments into fields of color, shifting horizons, and abstracted forms that evoke the experience of place.
