Gathering: A Collaborative Nature Art Experience for the Cancer Community
Date: Sun, Dec 6, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Venue: Duke Gardens–Barnes Welcome Center, Durham
Price: Free
Category: Outdoors
Offered in collaboration with Dr. Kristin Huang, a clinical psychologist and cancer survivor whose work explores the intersections of psychology, creativity, nature and human development. Join us at Duke Gardens for an afternoon of creativity and connection for people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Using flowers, leaves, branches and other natural materials, participants will create temporary designs on individual panels. There is no right way to make them, and no art experience is needed. The invitation is simply to slow down, work with the natural materials and create something that feels meaningful to you. Individual panels will be brought together in a large, quilt-like installation, transforming many distinct creations into a shared work of art. Weather permitting, the completed installation will be assembled outdoors on the Gateway Gardens Event Lawn, offering a chance to step back and experience what we have created together. Gathering is less about making something permanent than about the experience of making: noticing beauty, experimenting, reflecting and allowing space to discover what emerges. Each piece stands on its own while also becoming part of something larger—a fitting expression of the individuality and shared connection within the cancer community. All materials will be provided. No art experience is necessary. Fee: Free; registration recommended. Parking: Parking fees apply.
