The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents a screening of Rex Ingram’s 1926 silent horror film “The Magician” set to an original live score written by Stack / Pratt / Mislock: Andy Stack (Wye Oak), Kelly Pratt (Father John Misty) and Tim Mislock (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”). The artists will perform the original live score for the first time ever inside the Carolina Theatre’s historic 1,000-seat Fletcher Hall on October 28.Based on the 1908 novel by Somerset Maugham, “The Magician” traces the life of sculptor Margaret Dauncey (Alice Terry), who is paralyzed when one of her statues falls on her. Surgeon Dr. Arthur Burdon (Iván Petrovich) guides Margaret to a miraculous recovery, one witnessed by an unsetting, occultist magician named Oliver Haddo (Paul Wegener). Whilst Arthur and Margaret fall in love and plan to marry, Haddo cunningly stalks the bride-to-be with evil intent, hoping to continue his nefarious experiments in pursuit of creating and restoring human life. This one-night-only live event melds Ingram’s eerie black-and-white opus, released the same year the Carolina Theatre opened, with a performance of a new ambient score written by Stack / Pratt / Mislock in the Triangle in 2026.This special presentation is part of the year-long celebration of the Carolina Theatre’s centennial anniversary.
