Durham FRINGE is a 10-day festival igniting downtown Durham with adventurous, experimental performances and installations by Durham artists across disciplines. Presented by the Carolina Theatre of Durham, the city will become the stage as artists transform storefronts, businesses, alleyways and green spaces. The festival fuels both artistic innovation and downtown economic growth, celebrating Durham as a city where creativity and entrepreneurship thrive.Durham FRINGE Festival is performance-based, low-tech, experimental, eclectic, high quality in terms of craft yet “scrappy” in terms of creative uses of materials and content. Previous works, excerpts, or new works are encouraged to be proposed in the Artist Application. This is the pilot year for Durham FRINGE, meaning that this is the first time this festival has been produced. The intention is that this festival becomes an annual festival in Durham.

The Durham FRINGE Festival is a multi-day performing arts event featuring experimental music, theater, and art installations in non-traditional venues across downtown Durham. Because artists are using storefronts, alleyways, and public green spaces as their stages, you can easily stumble upon a performance while walking around town with your kids. Since this is a street-level, low-tech festival, it is best suited for older kids and teens who enjoy eclectic music and performance art. Ticket prices are not yet finalized, but many of the outdoor installations are easy to view for free as you explore. This festival makes a fantastic weekend outing because it turns a standard downtown walk into an interactive art hunt. You can grab lunch at a local diner, wander through the outdoor performance spaces, and introduce your kids to the local creative scene without committing to a long, seated theater show.
