Discovery Drop-In & Storytime is a free weekly outdoor program featuring children's books and self-guided nature activities at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Located in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden, the event hosts two separate reading sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the designated Story Circle, while hands-on activity stations remain open on the nearby picnic tables throughout the two-hour window. This drop-in program is best suited for toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers. While admission to the event is entirely free and does not require pre-registration, you will need to pay for parking at the Duke Gardens metered lots. Because the activities take place entirely outdoors, dress your children in play clothes that can get a little dirty, and bring a water bottle and sunscreen. This Thursday morning gathering makes an excellent outing for parents looking to ease into the weekend with a structured yet low-pressure outdoor activity. It allows you to combine a classic story hour with a peaceful walk through one of Durham's most beautiful public spaces.
Do I need to register in advance for the storytime?
No registration is required for this event. You can arrive and depart at any time between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
How much does parking cost at Duke Gardens?
While the event itself is free, Duke Gardens charges a parking fee of $2 per hour. You can pay at the automated kiosks using a credit card or through the mobile parking app.
What happens if it rains?
Because this program is held entirely outdoors in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden, it may be canceled or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Check the Duke Gardens website before heading out if rain is in the forecast.
