After-School Hangout: Checkers & Chess is a free, drop-in social hour for elementary school students at the Southeast Regional Library in Garner. Kids can step away from their tablets to play classic board games, build with LEGO bricks, and play rounds of bingo with other children from the community. This program is designed specifically for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. There is no registration required, so you can arrive at any point during the forty-five minute window. The library has a dedicated parking lot with plenty of free spaces, and you do not need to bring any supplies along as all games and building materials are provided. While this is a weekday afternoon event rather than a weekend activity, it serves as an easy transition into the weekend mindset. It gives your kids a chance to socialize in a structured, calm environment while you browse the bookshelves or enjoy a quiet moment in the library.
